FREEHOUSE
As a Freehouse we are pleased to offer a finely curated range of beers, wines, spirits and soft drinks.
Featuring new and boutique local producers as well as firm East Anglian favourites, we aim to appeal to a wide range of tastes and regularly update the bar with ‘guest’ and seasonal beverages.
A RICH HISTORY

During our recent refurbishment, we uncovered a large number of old title deeds to the pub dating from 1664 to 1791, plus a more modern wayleave from 1934. The last document in 1791 is a conveyance to John Cobbold, the Ipswich brewer, and the 1934 wayleave to Cobbold and Co. Ltd.
These significant historical documents have been passed to the Suffolk Archives for preservation and further research.

In more recent years, The Fountain was a favourite haunt of local icon, the cartoonist, Giles. As well as being a member of the pub darts team, he also spent many evenings at the pub’s piano where he famously jammed with a group of African American GIs during WW2.
In photographs taken by renowned photojournalist and artist Lee Miller in 1944, Giles is seen with the servicemen who would cycle to the pub with instruments (including double bass) strapped to their bicycles.
